One way we make it possible to deliver the print quality and competitive labels our customers are looking for is by using the best equipment on the market. That’s why USTL invested in two 13-inch Mark Andy Performance flexo combination presses, each with overhead rail systems, enabling a wide range of finishing processes to be performed inline. Each rail includes units for hot and cold foiling, embossing, and rotary screen printing.
Rotary screen printing is a vital technology that adds value for our customers and enhances their brands. A rotary printing screen can lay down thick layers of ink and varnish at relatively fast printing speeds, which allows us to include a range of stimulating effects to our labels. These effects include tactile graphics such as braille and other features that are raised or enhanced for greater visual and physical appeal.
Tactile Printing With SPGPrints’ Rotary Screen Integration (RSI®)
While rotary screen technology can be used for high-value visuals and tactile effects, the RSI printing unit was first used to create opaque white effects, which help the label itself appear as though it isn’t there. To create a no-label look, we use tactile matte, gloss, or “velvet touch” varnish over a flexo-printed graphic. The result is packaging that stands out but doesn’t require excessive materials.
The SPGPrints’ nickel rotary screens provide USTL with long-term cost-savings due to the reusability of the screens. USTL uses RotaMesh® and RotaPlate® screens to increase productivity and quality. Each structure provides the strength to maintain stability and precision at high press speeds. These screens can be used 10 or more times before needing replacement, making them a vital asset to the production process and allowing us to keep prices low for our customers.
Rotary Screens Add Value
Rotary screen embellishments are also adding value to our growing output. Crossing over from digital to analog printing can be a difficult process, but the range of available options makes it an investment worth pursuing. We’ve recently seen success with using rotary screen-printing embellishments for shrink-sleeves, as more customers are requesting the addition of tactile features to sleeves. This accelerating trend has presented some challenges as well as opportunities, and as always, we continue to work to elevate the presentation of our customers’ products.
